What to expect at Gamescom 2017: Press conferences and games

Although E3 2017 closed its doors back in June, Germany’s Gamescom 2017 is fast approaching and features some of the most exciting upcoming games of 2017, from Star Wars Battlefront 2 to Call of Duty: WW2 and everything in between. No matter what platform or type of game you like to play, you’ll find something you’ll love at Gamescom 2017.

But with so many companies showcasing games, how are you supposed to keep track? Here, we present some of the most popular press conferences and booths of Gamescom 2017.

Gamescom 2017 press conferences

While there will be a vast range of developers and games present at Gamescom 2017, some companies go that extra mile and hold dedicated press conferences prior to- or during the conference. While many take place in Cologne, they may also be available to watch online.

Xbox – Sunday 20 August 2017

While Microsoft isn’t hosting a dedicated press conference during Gamescom 2017, the company is planning to host an Xbox @ Gamescom live broadcast on Sunday 20 August 2017.

The live stream is set to begin at 8pm for those of us in the UK (9pm local time) and will feature interviews with developers, the latest news on upcoming games and, of course, new gameplay footage.

Nvidia – Monday 21 August 2017

In a turn of events, Nvidia is also hosted a dedicated event at Gamescom 2017. It’s the first time the company has held a press conference at the German conference, and it’s said to include exclusive hands-on opportunities for members of the press.

But what about for the legions of gaming fans at home? Nvidia will be hosting a ‘stage show’ that’ll be livestreamed from the event. While we’re not quite sure what’ll be featured in the show, it’s due to begin at 10am BST (11am local time) on Monday 21 August 2017.

EA – Monday 21 August 2017

EA is set to live stream its EA Live Show keynote that takes place on Monday 21 August 2017 at 5:30pm BST (6:30pm local time), the day before the show officially begins.

While the company is holding its cards close to its chest for now, we expect to see brand new gameplay footage from upcoming games including Star Wars Battlefront 2, Need for Speed Payback and FIFA 18, just to name a few.

Nintendo – Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 August 2017

Much like the Xbox team, Nintendo isn’t hosting a dedicated press conference at this year’s Gamescom. Instead, the company has announced that it’ll stream several live shows on its UK YouTube channel throughout the conference.

Tune in at 2pm BST (3pm local time) on Wednesday 23 August 2017 to catch a glimpse at the latest Super Mario Odyssey gameplay and interviews with the developer too.

Then, on Thursday 24 August 2017 at 11am BST (12pm local time), Nintendo will showcase gameplay from Metroid: Samus Returns, the upcoming game for Nintendo 3DS.

There is also said to be other shows and demos throughout Gamescom 2017 on the channel, with a full schedule being released closer to the time.

Which companies and games will be at Gamescom 2017?

As the name of the conference suggests, there will be a myriad of developers showcasing their latest games at Gamescom. While we can’t name every game and developer that’ll be at the event, here’s some of the most popular games and developers making an appearance at Gamescom 2017.

Along with the Xbox-themed live stream, Microsoft is also set to host an Xbox FanFest throughout the show, just like it did in 2016. The area, open to the public, features 27 playable Xbox One and Windows 10 PC games, along with the upcoming Xbox One X.

While the full list of games is yet to be revealed, we expect to see the likes of Age of Empires, Forza Motorsport 7 and Sea of Thieves.

While rumours suggested that Sony was going to make an appearance at Gamescom 2017, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

But while there’s no PlayStation-themed press conference or behind-closed doors demos for journalists, the company still has a stand at the show with popular PlayStation games said to include the likes of Uncharted: The Lost Legacy and Gran Turismo Sport.

As has been the case in previous years, Ubisoft is headed to Gamescom 2017 with a large roster of games available to play, many of which are AAA-rated.

If you head over to the Ubisoft stand at Gamescom, you’ll be able to play Assassin’s Creed: Origins, Far Cry 5, The Crew 2, Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, South Park: The Fractured But Whole and Steep: Road to the Olympics.

Nintendo has confirmed that while it isn’t hosting a dedicated press conference at Gamescom 2017, the company will have a stand during the conference.

The company has said that “the year’s biggest games for Nintendo Switch and 3DS” will be available to play, including the likes of Super Mario Odyssey, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Metroid: Samus Returns and Pokken Tournament DX.

In addition to hosting EA Live during Gamescom 2017, Electronic Arts is said to have a huge stand in the conference with plenty of upcoming games available for the public to play.

We expect to see the likes of Star Wars Battlefront 2, The Sims 4, Need for Speed Payback and FIFA 18 to be playable on the stand, along with other popular EA games.

Much like at E3 2017, Activision is concentrating on only two games at Gamescom 2017 – but boy, are those games popular. Expect to be able to play both Call of Duty: WW2 and Destiny 2 at the Activision booth during Gamescom 2017.
